St. Patrick's Day Parade in Vienna
Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh!

Irish Setters
Holding both the Irish
and the Austrian flag

The Vienna Pipes and Drums
Marching from the Scottish Abbey
at Freyung square to the Burgtheater

We are all Irish
Dancing in the streets

"When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away"

"And while springtime is ours
Throughout all of youth's hours,
Let us smile each chance we get"

I would have missed out on all the fun
were it not for this Irish gentleman,
whom I encountered earlier in the morning
while crossing the street near Schottenkirche
Thank you, SQMS David Ussher!

  1. I so love Ireland and love to be there every year for few weeks. Are you connected to the Emerald Isle somehow?

    1. Unfortunately, I have never been to Ireland and have no connection to the Emerald Isle either. I dream of being able to visit, though. x

  2. Wonderful impressions. Maybe I missed out on the fun, when returning earlier from Vienna? :D

    1. Mersad,
Vienna may seem small, but there are so many sights to chose from I would recommend to select a few and just enjoy yourself while walking around. There will always be unexpected discoveries and something new to look forward to, next time!

  4. The best about Ireland? Irish Breakfast Tea!
Heinrich Böll once praised Irish tea in an travel essay. He was right.
    I can drink it 24/7.

    Happy St. Patrick's day!

    2. Hi Merisi! Sis in law is my dealer. She lives in Ireland and visits Austria once, twice a year. I guess I am lucky. You can order Barry's Tea online, the tea is not so expensice, plus the shipping.
This one is not so expensive:

BUT: they list the tea as British tea, oh no!! ;-)

  7. Oh my gosh, it's so Happy!! I love these scenes, thank you. When Irish hearts are happy, all the world is gay...And I think in Boston, which has strong Irish roots, they say on this day we all can be Irish...Merisi, thank you for your recent comments on my blog & for sending the link to the Emily Dickenson poem. I really appreciated that!!

    1. You are welcome, SW! ;-)

I felt transported somewhere else, suddenly surrounded by English speakers (Irish!), a nostalgic moment, indeed. Vienna does that to me, at times, I turn a corner somewhere and suddenly I am not sure WHERE IN THE WORLD I am. ;-)

  10. Someone told me yesterday that St. Patrick's day is celebrated only in America. Apparently they were wrong.

  11. The dogs are fabulous! Looks like a very civil parade -- unlike the one in NYC!
