St. Marx Cemetery in Autumn Light
Autumn in Vienna

St. Marx Cemetery
The beautiful Biedermeier cemetery
was left to decay after
its closing as a burial ground in 1874

It fell into a long Sleeping Beauty slumber.
The tomb stones and memorials started crumbling,
bushes and trees grew into impenetrable thickets.
At one point, in the 1920s, the city even contemplated
tearing down the tombs and turning the whole area into a park

Thanks to the efforts of historian Hans Pemmer,
and due to the fact that St. Marx holds the mortal remains
of one of Vienna's most famous citizens, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
the cemetery was spared destruction.
It was renovated and opened to the public again in 1937

of All Souls Day, 2 November 2014

  1. Of course, autumn light's not always what we wish for:
All Souls day in Vienna meant fog falling into the treetops with a only few minutes of the sun almost burning through the grey soup, but dashing anyone's hopes for a piece of blue sky every single time.

  2. I can hear the leaves crunching underneath my feet as I walk down that path. Really gorgeous images.

  3. A damp foggy day, with glimpses of colour, and most certainly full of atmosphere. I love your visits to St Marx, your pictures are little jewels of this ancient area.

  4. It is a beautiful place, and I don't know how they could have let it fall into decay; but it's good they came to their senses and restored it!

  8. I can hear "The Third Man" movie theme playing in the background as I walk that path to a clandestine meeting at dark in the cemetery.
