And Mozart Wept
All Souls at St. Marx Cemetery

All Souls Day
St Marx Cemetery

All day long, fog was falling from the sky,
grey light on the gravesites in the narrower lanes

Somehow fitting for a day of remembrance
of those we have loved and lost

No bird song anywhere,
the sun and her yellow whip
beaten by dense fog

Yellow leaves, disarmed,
by the dreary light

The third image depicts the grave of Josef Madersperger
(1768-1850), inventor of the sewing machine .
the fourth one is a picture of the Mozart Memorial

The Biedermeier era cemetery of St. Marx
was closed as a burial ground 140 years ago, in 1874 -
it is open to the public throughout the year

Photographed in the afternoon
of All Souls Day, 2 November 2014

  1. The Madersperger grave is missing the top of its gravestone, a wrought iron cross.
I hope it was taken down for restoration and not by thieves.

I was so grateful there were some bright leaves to embellish the grey day.

    1. I felt a little frustrated that the day before was a bright sunny one, the opposite of what I encountered. Thank heaven the storms of the past week have left some brightly coloured leaves.

  5. Gorgeous colours, and Mozart's gravestone is an appropriate inclusion.

  6. St. Marx cemetery has a special place in my heart. I discovered it soon after I moved to Vienna and ever since it's been a place where I find beauty and peace.
