How far would you walk for Coffee?
Midsummer Coffee on a Glacier

Up there
Someone has stayed
in tents, overnight

I walk on a giant snowdrift,
at a safe distance from the edge.

while the mountain guide
inches closer, step by careful step,

A trekking group traversing the glacier,
roped together - a safety precaution,

with each step there is a risk of falling
into a crevasse hidden under the glacier's snow cover

One last effort,
one more slope to climb,

and then there is coffee,
served in a china cup with saucer,

and a glorious 360° view
of mountain peaks

Coffee served 9000 feet above sea level
at Seethaler Lodge
Dachstein Glacier
Styria, Austria

  7. Great story and photos. I love that there are no styrofoam or paper cups, even at the mountaintop! A much more sustainable practice. Congratulations on your courage to cross a covered glacier. Don't think I'd do that.

    1. While I was sitting there, drinking coffee literally on the rocks, a team member of the lodge started shovelling snow onto the roof. The sun would thaw it , and the snow water would run off into a tank, to provide water for the lodge.

    1. Maybe you'll change your mind once August settles in?
(Vienna felt like Louisiana last night, hot and humid as can be. I longed to be back up at the mountain top, possibly overnight, to catch some stiff breeze in the early morning:)
