Against The Dearth Of Monday Poems

A Red, Red Rose
by Robert Burns

O my luve's like a red, red rose.
That's newly sprung in June;

O my luve's like a melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

I am celebrating Burns' birthday
a week late, but I think beautiful poetry
with a bit of summer's joyous colours
may turn out to be an effective vade mecum
to carry along against winter doldrums.

I have another treat for you,
Burns' poem sung live
by a then very talented young singer,
Eva Cassidy of Washington, DC,
beloved by those lucky enough to hear her sing
there at Blues Alley in Georgetown
or in nearby Annapolis, at the Pearl,
as in the recording here:
"Red, Red Rose".

The text of the poem
can be found here.
