  2. Liebe Merisi,

Lovely images. I need to return to take in this aspect of the Serenissima's history and visual (post-Byzantine) iconography.

    FF&F,

Carnival has been a public aspect of Venetian life since at least 1268 (A.D.) and only ended (there) with the demise of the Venetian Republic in 1798.

Carnivale di Venezi is as much a part of the mystique and public persona of Venice as its foreign exoticism.

Venice, after all was the sole Western State to endure through the Renaissance, straddling both the known West and the exotic East. (The only rival for that position was the Byzantine Empire which was finally overrun by Ottoman Empire in 1453...)
