Monday Morning at Zauner's in Bad Ischl

Zauner's Melange
Coffee lover's heaven.
Trust me. :-)

This being Monday, and a rainy one at that here in Vienna,
I thought I let you indulge in Zauner's
wonderful sweet world,
a splendid place in the little town
of Bad Ischl, a 45 minutes' drive from Salzburg,
in the middle of the Lake Region called Salzkammergut.
This region is a little paradise on earth,
with beautiful mountains and lakes.
And splendid places like Zauner's "on the Esplanade",
on a walkway right by a mountain river,
the mountains itself within sight.

I wonder if this lady
simply couldn't bear to leave Zauner's,
and rather turned into white marble
(well, clearly a strong case of transference,
don't you think so
?).

This is part of the Salon on
the Esplanade branch
(I'll show you their beautiful garden
in another post
).

Salzburger Nockerl
Have you ever seen a more
fanciful Souffle'?
Sweet Meringue softness with
tart wild Preiselbeeren
hiding at the bottom
(Preiselbeeren are European cranberries,
tinier than the American ones,
but very flavourful
).

Zaunerschnitte
What a marvel!
First tasted it in Washington, DC
at the residence of the Austrian Ambassador
(Thomas Klestil, who got elected Austria's President
upon his return, really brought a taste of Austria
to his dinners and soirées
)

Zaunerpyramide

Zauneroblaten
The tastiest wafers ever.

End of the (chocolate and coffee) affair

Founded 1832 in Bad Ischl, the Zauner Café & Pastry Shop has always been a traditional Austrian enterprise offering a large selection of top quality products. Our sweet history is a story of success. In times of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy we were appointed to be "k.u.k. Hoflieferant" ("Imperial and Royal Purveyor to the Court") and the Republic of Austria entitled us to use the Austrian National Coat of Arms. Keeping up traditions and preserving proven principles whilst being open-minded for advanced views has always been our highest commandment.

Giving highest priority to maintaining a consistent, high level of quality has been crowned with success.

This will not be my last post about Zauner's,
on a par with Demel's in my book of favorite pastry shops.
Infact, I know of no third one that I would put
on the same pedestal.

  5. Thank you for the tour. This is one of the places I went to when I was in Austria. It was a cold, rainy, spring day and there was a table of "mature" ladies, dressed to the nines, having tea and I swore that someday that would be me. Thank you for reminding me.
