It's electrical lighting. Apparently I got lucky that night, I've been back to the Christmas market since and there were no lights turned on inside the palace (only on the very top, a small chandelier, but that belongs to a private apartment - you can rent rooms at the palace *g*).
Look at that lighting! What chandeliers and sconces! Natural or artificial? Can't quite tell from the photos. Beautiful in either case.
