Vanilla Crescents and Solstice Sunset
Christmas Cookies made in Vienna

Vanilla Crescents
My family's favorite
Austrian Christmas cookies

Baking as the sun is setting
on the shortest day of the year

A sheet of Vanillakipferl,
dusted with powdered sugar,
in the golden evening glow,

and outside,
a painted winter sky -
the angels baking cookies,
as my mother used to say

  1. Hi Merisi, I absolutely love that photograph of the winter sky and silhouette trees. You are a true artist. I wish you a wonderful Christmas filled with angel baked cookies and hope to meet up with you again in some enchanting coffee shop in 2015, if only in the virtual world. x

    1. Yes, it is! And baking my own meager selection of cookies makes me realize what a wonder woman my mother was! She baked the most complicated cookies, and in great quantities. After all, she had to feed a family of ten! ;-)

    1. I have to be really hold myself back, to not go and steal one myself!
(We were allowed to only eat broken or burnt ones, when we were children. Imagine, standing watch around the kitchen, hoping something bad would happen to the one or other cookie! The first "good" cookies were served on Christmas Eve, never earlier.

    1. They are, they are! Barely any sugar in the pastry dough, the dusting of powdered vanilla sugar adds just the right amount of sweetness, bringing the almond taste to the fore.

    1. Every day, at Christmastime, when i see the sun set in hues of gold and magenta, I hear my mother's voice, "The angels are baking, again!" - when I was little I believed her, I even saw little angel children with wings scurrying about in the celestial kitchen.
