A Walk in the Woods
Christmastime in Vienna

It had snowed through the night,
Vienna awoke to a winter wonderland

Snow turned to heavy rain
before noon, White Christmas melting away

Nonetheless, an intrepid friend and I
decided to brave the rain,
and have lunch in the woods anyway

We walked through the woods
of the Lainzer Game Reserve,
to Empress Elisabeth's Hermes Villa
and enjoyed our feast

By feast's end, my intrepid friend and I
turned into meek mice, fearful of rain,
but were saved by a restaurant elf -
who gave us a ride, all the way back to our car

  8. Despite my best efforts to conjure snow here, we are unlikely to get any.

  9. A restaurant elf - I'd like to meet one of those!

The photos are charming; I love the first one especially.

I am remembering a fascinating biography I read about the Empress Elisabeth . . .

  10. Merisi, on this Christmas Eve afternoon, I have so enjoyed seeing your recent posts in starry Vienna, and also the snowy woods. How wonderful to be able to have the walk through those woods to a beautiful, warming destination, and then to have the elf provide a dry rescuing return.

    Christmas Magic in the air!

Best wishes, dear Merisi, and many thanks for all your poetic, visual gifts to us throughout the year.

  15. The only hope I'd have of getting a coffee in our woods would be if I took a thermos full of it along with me. How lucky you are to know a friendly elf with a drivers license and car!

Wishing you a merry Christmas and a New Year full of good cheer!
