  5. The butterfly is a beautiful Gulf Fritillary rather than a monarch. While we do have monarchs here in the Southern Appalachians, the Fritillaries are much more common. Welcome to our beautiful mountians! I live in the Smokies in Tennessee.

    1. Thank you so much, Mary Anne! I obviously did not look close enough (even though I had a butterfly book). I am heading back to the Smoky Mountains from SC today, unless the storm warning grow too ominous (which would be a pity).
