Coffee, Anyone?

Morning Mélange
Kaas am Markt

*

"THE SUN just touched the morning;
The morning, happy thing,
Supposed that he had come to dwell,
And life would be all spring.

She felt herself supremer,—
A raised, ethereal thing;
Henceforth for her what holiday!
Meanwhile, her wheeling king

Trailed slow along the orchards
His haughty, spangled hems,
Leaving a new necessity,—
The want of diadems!

The morning fluttered, staggered,
Felt feebly for her crown,—
Her unanointed forehead
Henceforth her only one."

  5. Don't you just love "diadems?" I got to see Emily Dickinson's house on the road last year: I felt I was in the presence of greatness.

  7. Paz,
    I love farmers markets, always have. The first ones I remember are the Roman markets, Via Salaria, farmers coming in from the fertile countryside around Rome (insalata di campo - wild herbs collected in the meadows, fragolini di bosco - wild strawberries - from Lago di Nemi, in spring the first tomatoes - pink on the inside and oh so good! - from Sicily), then Washington, DC where farmers markets are brimming with the bounty of the southern climate there, now Vienna.

  8. Charles Gramlich,
    whenever I read this poem, upon reflection, I return to reread it because it leaves me always with the impression that I still have not discovered all there is hidden within.

  9. Amelia,
    thank you, how sweet of you to say that!

    Emily,
    that song and that video, sheer genius!
    Vienna is so beautiful and there would be so much more to capture if I only could spend my days wandering and taking pictures.

  10. A Brush with Color,
    I remember, Sue! I enjoyed seeing it through your eyes.
    I am reading Lyndall Gordon's "Lives Like Loaded Guns: Emiliy Dickinson and Her Family's Feuds" and I am ever more falling for her.

    Mary Howel Cromer,
    oh yes, reading Emily is balsam for the soul, isn't she?
