Vienna's Café Sperl

"Here there is nothing
I have taken from you

so I begin with memory
as old songs do

in this café
against the night

in this villa refrain
where we collect the fragment

no longer near us
to make ourselves whole ... "

  3. What a cafe! What a cafe!! I love it! And today I am gonna go to cafe, but not like this!

  4. Another post I can escape to --cafe after cafe. I do appreciate your site!

  5. I think that mirror keeps a copy of everyone who drinks coffee in front of it. It plays those memories back at night in a ghostly light with eerie music.

  6. Yes, I'll linger, thank you!

  7. Your pictures and Onaatje's poetry pair perfectly!

I loved your earlier post with the shadows and the big bronze bottom at the fountain side gave me a bit of a giggle.

  8. love the pillars with the curtains -daring!
Th young lady with the houdstooth jacket in your post above -seen them make a come back in magazines, but not actually see anyone wear it:)

  9. It is always so nice to have coffee and all too many calories in such a lovely setting!

  10. Thank you all for your kind comments! :-)

  11. I love howyou quietly bring us in for the kill...
That perfect silver tray of coffee.
    Heaven on earth!

  12. I like very much your photographies of Wiener cafés ! They are somptuous.
    Liebe Grusse, amitiés,

  13. Whenever I am visiting you, I am sure I will envy you the opportunity of going into all those perfect places:)

  14. Cafe Sperl was always my favorite when I lived in Vienna. And I'll be back there in two weeks to visit a sick relative. A sad occasion but I'm also eager to wander my old neighborhoods...
