The Goose that got away
all the Way to Vienna

"She knew
she was not Nightingale"

Do you remember
Louisa May Alcott's
ballad "The Lay of the Golden Goose"?
I am reminded of the plucky bird
every time I walk by these two cackling geese,
imagining that one of them must be the one
that "ran to the Atlantic pond
and paddled for her life
".

Entirely possible that she landed in Vienna,
after all her story ends on these notes:

"Soon up among the grand old Alps
She found two blessed things:
The health she had so nearly lost,
And rest for weary limbs
."

  1. I would say he was a rather silly goose arriving in Austria about St. Martin's Day!
