This Little Violet Went to Market

Down in a green and shady bed,
A modest violet grew.
It’s stalk was bent; it hung it’s head
As if to hide from view.

And yet it was a lovely flower,
Its colors bright and fair.
It might have graced a lovely bower
Instead of hiding there.

But there it was, content to bloom
In modest tints arrayed,
And there diffuse its sweet perfume
Within the silent shade.

Then let me to the valley go
This pretty flower to see,
That I may also learn to grow
In sweet humility
.

  1. I used to love being able to buy a bunch of Devon violets with my pocket money when I was a kid...or Parma violet sweets, come to that!

  2. So lovely! Our wild violets are blooming like mad -- I'll go gather some for the salad tonight.
