In the Time of Daffodils
Saturday Morning at the Farmers Market

"I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;"

"For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils."

"when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood
... "

When in a pensive mood ...
but lucky enough to live in Vienna,
head to the Yppen Farmers' Market
on Saturday mornings!

While you still can only dream
of hosts of golden Daffodils beneath the trees,
the farmers are already displaying
a show of brightly coloured spring flowers
ready for you to take home.

"The Daffodils"
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee;
A poet could not be but gay,
In such a jocund company!
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Thank you,
William Wordsworth!

  4. Beautiful poem and beautiful flowers. And as we prepare today for 8 more inches of snow in Minnesota, it will surely be a while before we see any daffodils.

  8. How gorgeous! Once at this time of year I visited a vast commercial greenhouse carpeted with pots of primroses -- it absolutely lifted my soul to see so many flowers. Your pictures are the same.

  10. Vickys and Juju,
    thank you both! :-)

    Arkansas Patty,
when I think of this poem, I think of driving on Rock Creek Parkway into Georgetown in Washington DC - on a sunny early Spring morning and discovering that on the southern exposure side the daffodils are already blooming! Unforgettable.

  11. Paris Breakfasts,
these tulips were grown in a greenhouse outside Vienna, not in Holland! ;-) This is a farmers' market, after all.

    Vicki Lane,

  21. Oh, Merisi ... William Wordsworth is my favorite poet, and it just doesn't get any better than his poetry and your photographs.

What a lovely way to begin my day.

  22. My favorite flowers are probably tulips--these colors are fabulous. I'm so ready for spring--our daffodils are coming up, but no sign of my tulips yet!

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    Lined up expectant,
    They gave me thrills.
Pistachio did spill upon my bib,
    This flavor wants
    A napkin and refills.

  31. Dear Merisi, Your beautiful photographs brought back so many happy memories...We took a gypsy wagon through Wales in early May and there were Daffodils in thick yellow carpets everywhere. My favorite lines of Wodworths' poem has always been "and then my heart with pleasure fills and dances with the daffodils. Gina

  35. The Teacup incident,
    you are welcome! :-)

    Vicki Lane,
I remember my neighbor back in DC wrapping the bulbs in something like chicken wire to keep the squirrels out.

I wandered hungry as a horse.
For oft, when on my meandering way
An afternoon snack bears no remorse.

I dream of framboise takeout food.

  41. Monday, 4 March 2013

    Dear Readers,
I tried to put together a new post this morning. Alas, while I feel better, I realized I am not up to create anything inspired. So, back to this old post of mine, of a Saturday market just like the one I undoubtedly would have encountered the other day, if I had felt well enough to venture out.
I hope spring has brought sunshine to your shores or some needed early autumn rain where you live,
    best wishes,
    Merisi

  42. I am in bed with a box of tissues, lots of tea, my laptop and books, sneezing away, so this shot of colour and a spring feeling is very welcome.

  43. What a lovely post! The flowers are lovely and deserve another showing. I hope you will soon feel better. Have a wonderful day. Blessings...Mary

    The colors and textures...
    Sigh...

  45. Thank you all! xxx

I am up and trying to get two urgent tasks done downtown.
This flu literally knocked me off my feet. Feel wobbly like some rickety chair.
Thank you all for your get well wishes,
    Merisi

  46. Oh, I am certain that these lovely blossoms brightened your day as they have done for me this morning. So happy that you now feel among the living after your too-long bout with the flu.

Seeing these flowers and thinking of spring is a good feeling. I just learned that St. Paul has gotten 7 inches of snow overnight with more on the way. So happy that we are here wintering in Charleston, SC. We are escaping the worst as I smile.
