Last night, via various media, we were able to see gorgeous fireworks celebrating the arrival of 2010. Now, this morning, you have showed us exceptional beauty that surpasses those fireworks.

Cheers to you and so many thanks for bringing the many facets of Vienna to us.

  11. You are your city's best ambassador -- I wish I could hop on a plane and be there.

thank you, and Happy New Year to you too! :-)

I am really proud of being able to provide you with perfectly delicious, yet calorie-free chocolate creations! :-)

  18. Fat, frumpy and fifty,
I watched it too, as so often before,
what else would one do on New Year's Day morn'? ;-)

    you are welcome,
thank you too, for your views of your fair city!

    Vicki Lane,
    thank you! *blush*
How far are you from the nearest airport? ;-)

  19. Maalie,

    A Thousand Clapping Hands,

    Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah),
    thank you!
May all your wishes come true
    in the New Year!

  20. Pietro,
    sinfully good Annatorte,
necessitates a trip to the confessional afterwards each and every time. ;-)
I was at the dress rehearsal, but watched today's concert too, on TV.

  21. A very Happy New Year to you, dear Merisi. I look forward to a year of new photos!

  22. Wow! Merisi, thank you for commenting on my Journal so I could find your blog. The photographs are ALL fabulous. Happy New Year!

  23. a postcard...I was fine until I saw the Anna Torte and then I was done for!! Happy New Year to you in the wonderful city of Vienna !!!

  24. Happy new Year Merisi!

The ceiling pics are out of this world! I always wondered if the artists who painted ceilings like that developed neck problems...

How did you watch/listen to the New Years concert?

  25. Steph,
    thank you,
and the very best of everything to you and your loved ones too! :-)

    Lori Skoog,
    welcome and thank you! :-)

  26. Rosemary,
    thank you!
Luckily, the Anna-Torte is such a rich - but oh so delicious - treat, I need a friend to share it with, because three bites, and you are in chocolate nougat heaven, desiring no more for another six months (that's about the frequency I nosh on that delicacy. ;-)

    jeannette stgermain,
remember Michelangelo, the sculptor who also painted the frescoes of the Sixtine Chapel at the Vatican? Ross King in his non-fiction book "Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling" describes not only the kind of craftmanship it took to create the frescoes, but also how he scaffolded the chapel and how he worked on the ceiling. I want to know for myself about the creation of the ceiling paintings of the Golden Hall, I shall ask a friend who may know.

I was at the Golden Hall for the dress rehearsal, but today's concert I watched on TV. I know there is some kind of a lottery every year, where the luck of the draw decided upon who gets tickets to the actual New Year's Day concert. As far as I know everybody can apply. There is a good part of the tickets allotted to guests of honour, Austria's president for example and other dignitaries.

  27. Such beauty, I can't even imagine it.

    Thank you.

Happy new year to you. xxx

  28. Thank you for mention the concert. it's on tonight on my tv and I almost forgot about it.

    Happy New Year too

  29. I was just commenting about your lovely blog on Twitter. Thanks so much for sharing these gorgeous photos- such a wonderful escape! Happy New Year!

  30. These are utterly astounding. So beautiful. You handle such a range of subjects so well. You inspire me.

  31. Happy New Year! The photos are just beautiful.

  32. Oh the top photo is a stunner! WOW!
Happy New Year, Happy New Year!!

  33. Beautiful sights. Happy New Year!

  34. Just to add that I watched a recording of the concert on BBC last night. It is amazing how much a really great conductor can get out of a really great orchestra with so little arm-waving. It is astonishing how he brought the woodwind in on time with just a slight inclination of his head and half the time he wasn't even using his baton.

    Loved the Cuckoo polka!

Bravo all round (including for this post!).

  35. The perfect start to a New Year - Demels!

  36. Quelle belle déclaration d'amour!!2010, Merisi, you speak french!!Congratulations and friendship from France!

    Dear friends,
I am aware this post will not show up on your newsfeed. The reason being that I only changed the publishing date, henceforth no "new" post showing. I chose to republish only via resetting the date because this comment section to this particular post is like a keepsake for me.
Wishing you all the best of everything in the New Year,
peace, health, happiness, joy, the whole good side of life,

  52. Stunning. Did I ever tell you that my father (God rest his soul) adored the Vienna New Year's concert? :)

Should I go on with Christmas images until Twelfth Night or ……
The sun's shining, a faint promise of spring …. no, I know, snow will come soon enough, January, February, into March, who knows. Now let's seee what "talks" to me while I am archiving the last of 2013!
